Call him "my cousin Ralphie."
A fedora-wearing 75-year-old Brooklyn pol was busted for practicing law without a license after he tried to defend a relative in Brooklyn Criminal Court, the Daily News has learned.Ralph Perfetto, a fixture in Bay Ridge politics, gave "notice of appearance" for cousin Anthony Martire, waived the reading of charges and submitted paperwork, according to court records."If I may, your Honor, with the court's permission, may I submit two notarized affidavits from eyewitnesses that speak to the contrary of what did happen?" Perfetto asked Judge Evelyn Laporte during an August 2008 arraignment.
Martire, charged with menacing his auto mechanic with a screwdriver after a money dispute, was facing a year in jail. Perfetto was nabbed after he sent paperwork to the Brooklyn district attorney's office with letterhead that said "Ralph Perfetto, Private Investigator." Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan has been appointed special prosecutor because Perfetto is a Democratic district leader.
Perfetto didn't endear himself to prosecutors by hiring and firing four lawyers during the investigation. He finally surrendered in April. "The delay in the arrest was as a result of Mr. Perfetto repeatedly switching attorneys as we arranged a surrender," said Donovan spokesman William Smith.
A district leader since 1992, Perfetto previously made headlines for getting into a fistfight with a rival in 2003. He declined to comment through his lawyer. Charges against Martire were dismissed after he got a real lawyer. Now Perfetto is facing a year in jail.
